“I Can Do Hard Things”: Paityn’s Recovery from Guillain-Barré Syndrome at 14

Body

After suddenly becoming paralyzed and diagnosed with a rare neurologic condition, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), 14-year-old Paityn C. came to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

After 20 total weeks of hospitalization … after giving it her all in intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy … and after relearning how to breathe, talk, eat and walk on her own — Paityn was ready to return home.

Wearing a T-shirt that read “I Can Do Hard Things,” Paityn — with her family and care team by her side — rang the bell to celebrate her discharge from inpatient care. Now, she is continuing her recovery in DayRehab and has set her sights on returning to club volleyball. Her family credits Shirley Ryan AbilityLab with “giving Paityn her life back.”

Watch Paityn’s journey and see her celebrate this powerful moment.
