Procedures

Our physicians may sometimes recommend a procedure to help with your recovery from your pain. The following are some of the procedures that are performed by our fellowship-trained and board-certified pain physiatrists:

Injections

  • Epidural steroid injections targeted to the spine to reduce inflammation and relieve pain
  • Facet joint and facet nerve injections for back or neck pain
  • Joint Injections to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in joints such as the hip, knee, and shoulder
  • Occipital nerve injections for headaches and occipital neuralgia
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint injections for low back or buttock pain
  • Sympathetic ganglion injections for chronic nerve pain
  • Trigger point injections to relieve muscle knots, usually in the upper back and neck

Blocks

  • Genicular Nerve Blocks to temporarily block pain signals, often used to diagnose and treat chronic knee pain or arthritis. injected around the knee
  • Lumbar sympathetic blocks to reduce certain types of leg pain
  • Peripheral nerve blocks to block pain signals coming from specific nerves to the brain
  • Plexus blocks for reducing regional pain, such as in the abdomen and pelvis
  • Stellate ganglion blocks to reduce pain in the upper extremities

Nerve Stimulation & Other Procedures

  • Peripheral nerve stimulation electrical pulses to reduce pain signals going to the brain
  • Phenol Ablation Injection using a chemical agent to disrupt nerves, providing lasting relief for certain types of chronic pain
  • Radiofrequency ablation procedures use heat to “turn off” pain-carrying nerves
  • Spinal cord stimulation a device that sends electrical signals to the spinal cord to interrupt pain signals
  • Vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty a procedure to stabilize a fractured vertebra
