Kyle’s Story: Back to an Active Lifestyle Following a Brain Injury

Body

In February 2018, Kyle was in a car accident that caused a severe brain injury, affecting his speech, mobility, memory and activities of daily living. Determined to walk and speak again, Kyle worked hard to recover at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Following a month of intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy, and additional time spent at a transitional facility, he was able to return to his home in St. Louis, Mo.

“During the time that he was at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, we hit a lot of milestones — from not being able to communicate to being able to speak his first words,” said his mom, Kathy.

Since he’s returned home, Kyle has embraced an active lifestyle. Today, he works part-time as a front desk assistant. His memory continues to improve and he recently started driving again. He strives to walk 10,000 steps a day, and hopes to start running soon.
