ABC 7 Chicago recently featured Shirley Ryan AbilityLab patient Wesley F., a 15-year-old who experienced a rare spinal stroke that caused paralysis. The segment highlights Wesley’s determination, the support of his family and community, and the intensive inpatient rehabilitation he is undergoing at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

A high school athlete and golfer, Wesley was at a golf lesson when he suddenly started feeling numbness in his body. He and his family later learned he had stroke.
At Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, he is participating in intensive therapy with a team of pediatric rehabilitation specialists working together to help him regain movement and independence.
In fact, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is one of the only rehabilitation hospitals with its own inpatient pediatric floor, and an interdisciplinary care team of physicians, therapists, nurses and other clinical staff who provide customized care to meet a child’s individual recovery goals.
While Wesley is in inpatient care, his friends and teammates visit him regularly, and his family and community have rallied behind him with the motivational — and appropriately golf-inspired — mantra, “Win Fore Wes.”
Wesley’s family is celebrating every milestone as he makes progress in his recovery. The story noted that his dad, Matt, has vowed not to shave until Wesley is released from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
“We’re just celebrating every little thing because those things add up,” said Matt.
