DESCRIPTION
Chronic pain is a major barrier to rehabilitation, affecting function, recovery and quality of life and many patients experience acute or chronic pain following neurological injuries or hospitalizations. Chronic pain can alter neurochemistry, reduce grey matter and impair cognition. Emerging research indicates that neuroplasticity facilitates reversal of these changes when pain is effectively addressed, yet carryover remains a challenge when education is purely didactic. This webinar introduces a pain management program designed for individuals with neurological and medically complex conditions in an intensive outpatient rehabilitation setting. Led by speech, occupational and physical therapists, this program integrates current pain science, cognitive rehabilitation and biopsychosocial principles to enhance self-efficacy and functional independence.
Participants will gain practical tools to implement structured pain education within their own settings and to integrate active learning components into pain education, translate novel knowledge into functional skills and enhance patient independence and quality of life. This evidence-based approach ensures sustainable, effective pain management, improving rehabilitation outcomes and long-term self-management. Ideal for rehabilitation professionals, this webinar provides a replicable model for enhancing pain education in clinical practice.
LEARNER OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify effective tools of pain management education and their role within an interdisciplinary pain education program
- Define a biopsychosocial framework to pain management education
- Define and apply cognitive rehabilitation techniques to support active learning in a structured pain education program
