Grant Award: Novel Device to Monitor Patients and Prevent Pressure Ulcers

Posted By Sheila Burt

Body

The Regenstein Foundation Center for Bionic Medicine (CBM) received an internal grant to develop a data-driven tracking device that can be fitted to hospital beds within the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and used by nursing staff to monitor a patient's orientation within the bed and how long they have been stagnant.

The device will require a smaller amount of sensors than existing monitoring systems and will instead employ novel signal processing algorithms. Dr. Todd Kuiken, MD, PhD will oversee the project with Mickey Smith, BS, a research assistant at CBM, and Katherine Earnest, MSN, RN, CRRN, Nurse Manager.
