The Independence Cup is a premier regatta for sailors with physical impairments. Featuring three classes of boats for singlehanded, doublehanded and triplehanded racing, the event provides competitors access to a professionally maintained fleet of 20 boats, along with complimentary lodging and other event support.
Held at Burnham Harbor in downtown Chicago, the four-day regatta brings together sailors from across the country for competitive racing on Lake Michigan. Racing typically begins each morning at approximately 10 am and concludes in the afternoon, with schedules adjusted as needed based on weather and wind conditions.
Visiting sailors stay at the historic Palmer House Hilton, where hotel accommodations are included as part of the event. Additional support includes travel grants, a Burnham Park Yacht Club–hosted barbecue and an awards dinner, helping make the Independence Cup a welcoming experience for all competitors.
