About Me
An internationally recognized physician-scientist specializing in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), Tae Hwan Chung, MD, is launching Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary POTS and autonomic disorders program.
Dr. Chung's vision is to establish Shirley Ryan AbilityLab as a global leader in POTS and autonomic medicine by bringing together clinicians, scientists and engineers to develop innovative, mechanism-based approaches that move beyond traditional organ-based care and toward precision diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of POTS.
In this leadership role, Dr. Chung and his team will provide comprehensive clinical treatment to patients while advancing understanding of this disorder through research.
POTS is a complex disorder of the autonomic nervous system that can cause disabling symptoms like dizziness, chronic fatigue and brain fog. The condition has gained increasing recognition following the COVID-19 pandemic, as autonomic dysfunction has emerged as a major contributor to long COVID syndrome.
Prior to joining Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in 2026, Dr. Chung founded and directed Johns Hopkins Medicine’s POTS program, helping establish it as a nationally recognized destination for patients with POTS and related disorders. He developed novel clinical offerings while achieving grant-funding success researching POTS and the autonomic nervous system. In the process, he fostered validation and awareness in support of the growing number of people who live with this condition.
Dr. Chung received his medical degree in his native South Korea. He later completed a surgical internship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, and his physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residency and fellowships in neuromuscular medicine and spinal cord injury medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
In addition to his work at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, he is an associate professor of PM&R for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and maintains an adjunct faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins University.
