Functional Electrical Stimulation & High Repetition Task Training in Spinal Cord Injury

DESCRIPTION: This on-demand course provides current evidence for the use of electrical stimulation in the upper extremity of individuals with cervical level spinal cord injury. The course reviews task specific training and functional electrical stimulation (FES) basics as well as FES motor and sensory stimulation usage. Three video presentations provide an overview of functional electrical stimulation usage and practice parameters in the individual with a spinal cord injury.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION: This interactive online course consists of three video presentations with integrated questions to check your understanding, an assessment, and a feedback survey. Learning activities are structured to reinforce the course objectives and it will take approximately 60 minutes to complete.

This course is intended for physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapy assistants

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the use of high repetition task specific training with cervical level spinal cord injury (SCI)
  • Establish the basics of functional electrical stimulation and SCI
  • Review current evidence based functional electrical motor stimulation treatment for Upper Exremity SCI
  • Describe the use of somatosensory stimulation within cervical SCI treatment
