Swelling (edema) in limbs often occurs after reduced activity due to fluid buildup from slowed circulation, especially when legs hang down while sitting. To manage swelling, wear properly fitted elastic stockings before getting up, elevate legs and arms throughout the day, and consider larger shoes to avoid pressure sores.

Contractures—stiff joints caused by shortened muscles and tendons—can affect elbows, shoulders, knees, and hips. They are painful, limit movement, and interfere with daily activities. Signs include difficulty fully straightening or bending limbs; severe cases prevent joint movement entirely.

To prevent contractures, stretch joints daily using range of motion exercises. Prone positioning (lying on the stomach) helps stretch knees and hips. Follow medical guidance for treatment, which may include medication, exercises, splints, or casting.
