About Me

James W. Atchison, DO, is currently the Medical Director of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab's Center for Pain Management (CPM), and Professor of PM&R at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed his medical school training at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio, and his PM&R residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus. He has been in practice at academic medical centers for more than 20 years, including the University of Kentucky and the University of Florida prior to coming to Northwestern/RIC. Dr. Atchison has been a nationally recognized teacher and researcher in PM&R and Pain Management throughout his career. He has presented courses, lectures and workshops nationally and internationally on pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management, care of spinal injuries and spinal manipulation. More locally he won teaching awards at the University of Kentucky and the University of Florida, while developing and directing a PM&R Spine Fellowship at the University of Florida that lasted 13 years and graduated 19 specialists.
