The Language of the Heart: Stories, Creativity, and Resilience in the Presence of Aphasia
Melanie Drane is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles. In 2010, her elder sister barely survived a massive stroke that left her with aphasia. The two sisters began to live together again as midlife adults.
As a psychotherapist, Melanie wanted to understand how families adapt to aphasia, but she found very little support or literature in her psychotherapy community. She decided to make it a focus of her work as a psychotherapist. In the process, she became fascinated by how sharing stories and creativity can support aphasia recovery and refresh our relationships with each other.
