Tracheostomy Safety and Management

Description: Patients with tracheostomies present opportunities for improving patient safety because emergencies can occur at any time and staff/patients/families must be prepared.  Opportunities for improvement include recognizing emergencies and initiating immediate life-saving treatment, ensuring presence of necessary bedside supplies, implementing recommended tracheostomy care practices, providing staff education and ensuring competence, and ensuring patient/family education. This session will review common tracheostomy emergencies, recommended management, and discuss the development and implementation of a quality improvement project aimed at improving safety of patients with tracheostomies.
